⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Coconut is a new solo play written and produced by Ellora Kamineni which tells the story of an unnamed female lead who is performed by Rea Malhotra Mukhtyar, the audience first meets this character when she is struggling under the expectations of her parents who are determined for her to go into one of three ‘brown careers’, medicine, law or engineering. This production runs at various venues around Edinburgh until the 26th August and tickets are £8.
This play is brilliant and unflinching in its portrayal of the characters live as the audience dives into her struggles, this is done through the use of brilliant dark humour which Rea performs with such brilliance. The nature of piece will of course receive comparisons to other solo shows such as Fleabag, but Coconut is unlike these others, telling a story that is often ignored by these kind of shows.
Following the end of the show, we are informed that this was actually a work-in-progress show, this surprised me greatly as it felt as though I was watching a finished piece, and has made me look forward to seeing how this show progresses in further runs.
Whilst the technical elements of the show itself are sparse with little set, lighting or sound used within the show, this works really well to bring the story itself into focus.
There isn’t long left to catch this show in its current run so act quickly to get your tickets, although I’m sure there will be a future run for this show.
