⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Police Cops returns this year to Assembly George Square Studio 1 at the Edinburgh Fringe after 5 sell out years running until the 29th August, following this it transfers to London's Southwark Playhouse from the 8th September.
Personally, Police Cops has been one of my most anticipated shows of the Fringe thanks to its stellar creative team, most notably with its music written by Ben Adams known for his work on the musical Eugenius.
This show lives entirely up to its bizarre title, from the moment the lights go down, the audience are plunged into the height of 80s America as we follow the protagonist, Jimmy Johnson’s journey to become ‘the best police cop’. Every single part of this show is entirely strange and that is what endears it massively to receive a huge response from the audience and a rare Fringe standing ovation.
I absolutely loved this show with so many brilliant parts to it. Firstly I must mention the incredible cast whose comic timing was fantastic and even when moving at such a brakeneck speed. This is an incredibly hard working cast with the majority of actors taking on several different roles including but not limited to a man wearing a morph suit. It is difficult to single anyone out, but Zachary Hunt as Jimmy Johnson brought great humour to his role. I must make a special mention to the audience work within the show and how brilliantly the actors responded to the addition of a baby within tonight’s crowd.
The songs in this show are excellently put together by the writing team on the show, although I must admit the first song maybe took a little while to get going, they all fit brilliantly into the 80s era and are incredibly catchy! The songs are brought together by a fantastic set design by Andrew Exeter which along with the props within the show allows for some great physical comedy, his neon lighting design also helps transport the audience.
I highly recommend this show to anyone who is a fan of comedy or musical theatre, make sure to catch it before it sells out!
